With its long history of wine production, the Saumur Region is one of the oldest vineyards in France.
The history of the Loire and its wines is intertwined with the history of France.
Its origins date back to the end of the 3rd century. It was at this time that the Roman Emperor Probus planted vines in the Saumur region for the first time. It is only around the 5th century that the real birth of viticulture in the Loire Valley takes place.
During the following centuries, the influence of the Augustinian and Benedictine monks is preponderant in the development of the various vineyards.
A time of discovery, then of infatuation, it was not until the 18th century that the Loire wines of Saumur were truly appreciated and sought after.
